Training Race No. 4.

The third and last training race for the Tarbes team is from Poitiers with the British Barcelona Club on 12th June which provides an ideal location for this final warm up. Poitiers lies to the South of Tours at 346 miles 1097 yards from the loft. The old town sits on a plateau which some 40 meters above the three rivers that surround it supplying a gentle launching platform for the race. The actual liberation site is in the car park of the Parc de Expositions towards the eastern edge of the town. Poitiers lies slightly further east than some of the other race locations putting it almost directly in line with Tarbes and while it is not at all sure this has any direct effect on the Tarbes race it does set them off in the sort of country  that hopefully they will negotiate in that race.

Saturday Morning

Good news the birds in the Poitiers National have been liberated at 0830 in blue skies and a light Southerly wind turning Northerly on route. Please do not forget to verify your first pigeon within 60 minutes after veryfying you will be asked to press the 1 button on your phone and you will be given a four digit number which should be recorded on the top right hand corner of your verification paper. I will update this line as soon as possible this evening with the provisional early times. Good Luck.

Steve Appleby's Weather for Pigeon Fanciers

UPDATED SATURDAY 12th JUNE AT 09:00 HOURS.

Cloud carrying drizzle and patchy rain moved up from the south of France over night and was positioned over the Alencon area very early this morning. This was confirmed but the MNFC convoyer at Alencon at 06:15 hours.  Examining the rainfall images showed the location of this poor weather over central northern France early this morning. (See image captured at 06:00 below) Fortunately due to rising pressure this offending cloud is dissipating gradually clearing the flight path through France to the northern coast line. By 08:00 hours conditions improved as the drizzle had petered out leaving cloud cover only.  The channel is clear and visibility 15 miles plus. Winds are light over land generally from the north but stronger over the open sea at force 2 to 3 about 14 mph gusting sometimes up to 20 mph. As we are aware the pigeons will have to work against the head winds.  Winds over England will have a slight north westerly influence and temperatures will reach maximums of 21 C, pleasantly warm. So to conclude weather conditions over France will improve with the emphasis on the longer convoyers wait before liberating the better the race, even so due to the head winds racing not that easy.
Winds light and variable over central France changing to northerly over northern France. They are quite fresh over the channel gusting occaisionally to 20 mph.

I’m sorry to be slow with this race report fortunately the pigeons were a little quicker.  With pigeons on the North road perhaps unsurprisingly doing over 2000 ypm with a north wind it is a testament to modern pigeons that the winners on the South road managed to exceed 1200 ypm, because that is the velocity of the winners in this fourth and last training race from Poitiers. TEAM RML’s first arrival was GB07V44109 who timed at 17-57-04 this would have given him a velocity of about 1075 ypm and place him 4th Section and 70th open on Provisional times. He was not formally timed purely because I was trying to get some domestic chores done. 109 competed in this race last year, albeit with the BICC, and his form comparison is this, in 2009 liberated in a light East wind the winner was in the North section with a velocity of 1502 and 109 achieved 1184 while this year in a North wind the winner of the BBC in Central section was doing 1213 and the BICC winner liberated 30 mins later was in the East section on 1178 while 109 was on 1075. So he would seem to be on as good form and perhaps a little better.
